The number of Australian tourists in Bali reached 432,480 during the January-July 2011 period, up 26.58 percent from 341,664 in the same period last year.

“The significant increase puts Australia in the first place among the top ten sources of Bali`s foreign tourists,” I Gede Suarsa, the head of the Bali Central Bureau of Statistics, said here on Tuesday.

Most of them came through Ngurah Rai airport by plane straight from their country, and only 7,135 came by ships or yachts.

In 2010 the number of Australians holidaying in Bali reached 641,588, a 43.67 percent increase compared to 2009 when the figure -was 446,570.

Australians have become increasingly interested in Bali, as they consider the paradise island their “second home”. Besides, Bali is just a short flight away from Australia while the Australian economy is improving.

Gede Suarsa said Australia contributed 27.25 percent of the total number of foreign tourists coming to Bali totaling 1.58 million during the period of January-July 2011.

The figure increased 10.60 percent from 1.43 million in the same period last year.

He added the numbers of tourists from nine out of ten of the biggest contributors of tourists to Bali had increased significantly and that of only one of them had declined.

The nine countries, including Australia, were China up 11.63 percent from 118,008 to 131,731; Malaysia 19.27 percent from 80,406 to 95,898; Taiwan 1.41 percent from 78,059 to 79,162 ; South Korea up 0.54 percent from 71,019 e to 71,399 ; Singapore up 30.97 percent from 48,020 to 62,893 ; France 7.18 percent from 56,744 to 60,817 ; England 8.49 percent from 51,491 to 55,864 ; and the United States up 25.58 percent from 39,806 to 49,989.

The country with the declined number of tourists to Bali was Japan which was down 26.07 percent from 141,743 in the first seven months of 2010 to 104,788 in the same period this year.

After spending weeks searching the hills of Bali for a home to buy, John Duffield and Rachel Plecas settled on a house that was something of a snake pit.

But even though they found a python slithering through the run-down house during their initial inspection, they fell in love with the overgrown elements of the property, which had once been used as an aviary.

“There was so little to choose from, so we opted to take it and renovate it,” Ms. Plecas said.

Good houses for sale are hard to find in inland Bali, amid the island’s picturesque landscape of jungles and rice paddies. Most new homes are either occupied by the owners or built specifically as rentals.

Older places tend to quickly fall victim to Bali’s severe tropical elements, unless they are painstakingly maintained.

“There is more and more product on the market but not necessarily a lot of good product,” said Zoë Rice, who works for Elite Havens, a Bali property agency.

Demand for inland properties has increased dramatically in recent years, primarily driven by foreigners from Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore, local property experts say.

Foreigners cannot own land in Bali, or elsewhere in Indonesia; they either have to lease or to buy through a local surrogate. Last year, the Indonesian government discussed loosening restrictions on foreign ownership, but no action was taken.

“There was not much international investment in Bali inland properties before year 2000,” said Ricky Wirapatria, general manager of the rental company Ranadi Villa and spokesman for the Bali Villa Association. “But I see during the past 10 years, international demand or interest has extremely increased.”

With villas hard to find, many foreigners opt to lease land and build new homes, said Jared Collins, a senior advisor with Ubud Property, a property company. Since 2005, the price for buildable land has nearly tripled in the Ubud region, fueled in large part by interest from foreigners, he said. Recently, the region has received a lot of publicity as one of the locations in Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling book “Eat, Pray, Love” and the 2010 movie starring Julia Roberts.

In Ubud, buying a one-are, or 100-square-meter, plot of buildable land in a rice field costs about 90 million to 180 million rupiah, or about $10,000 to $20,000, which is not the bargain some shoppers expect to find on the island.

To lease a property near Ubud generally costs about 1.1 million to 2.9 million rupiah per are a year, or $125 to $325, Mr. Collins said. Leases typically run for 20 to 25 years and are renewable for as long as 70 years.

“A lot of people who come here have the idea of prices from five to 10 years ago,” Mr. Collins said.

To Jonathan Pye, the scarcity of suitable homes was one of the Briton’s main reasons for buying a house near Ubud last year, a transaction he made through a surrogate. He said he viewed the purchase as a good investment, adding, “It didn’t seem feasible that prices would go down.”

After years living in Singapore, Mr. Pye and his wife, Louise, decided to settle on Bali to enroll their two daughters in the Green School, an environmentally focused private school primarily catering to expatriates, co-founded by the jeweler John Hardy.

Working with Mr. Collins, they paid the equivalent of about $350,000 for a five-bedroom home. “A lawyer in London wouldn’t want me to sign,” Mr. Pye said. “But this is the way it works, and you get as much protection as you can get.”

After buying the property, Mr. Pye learned there were other local customs he needed to follow. They had to meet the banjar, the leader of the local community, and arrange a series of blessings. “If it has been cursed, you can’t get staff to work on the house,” Mr. Pye said.

Ms. Plecas and Mr. Duffield were already experienced in the nuances of the Bali property market when they started shopping. In 2000, they had built Villa Bukit Naga, a seven-bedroom house in a river valley outside Ubud, which they now rent to travelers for $1,650 a night during peak season.

They later decided they wanted to be closer to Ubud and, after finding the run-down house, just a short walk from the town center, they paid the equivalent of $80,000 for the remaining four years on the lease. They spent four months, and another $80,000, to renovate.

The result is an open-style house with one large master bedroom set in a sprawling terraced garden. A small pool is steps from the living room. The aviary has been restored, and they are using it to rehabilitate injured birds.

“What really struck us, and continues to fill us with joy and wonder, are the beauty of the gardens and the sense that the property is a Garden of Eden,” Ms. Plecas said.

The Cultural and Tourism Resources Agency (BSDKP) of the Culture and Tourism Ministry said three Indonesian cultural heritages will be forwarded to Unesco in 2011 for nomination as world cultural heritages, Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported.

“The three Indonesian cultural heritages are the Bali traditional dance, Noken and the Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature (TMII),” Director for Research and Cultural Development of the Cultural and Tourism Resources Agency of the Cultural and Tourism Ministry Harry Waluyo said here Sunday.

He said the choice of the three cultural heritages was because they reflected Indonesia’s geographical representation as Indonesian culture has been concentrated in Java Island only.

This can be proven by the recognition of the Angklung (bamboo musical instruments) as the world’s cultural heritage from Indonesia by Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 2010.

“So, after West Java, the choice of forwarding Indonesian culture to Unesco was switched to the culture outside Java island, namely Bali and Papua,” Harry said.

Harry said there are nine regencies or cities of Balinese dances in Bali.

While Noken had been chosen because it has become a special icon of the people of Papua. Noken or Agiya is an instrument normally used by women in Papua’s interior to sing a lullaby for their babies.

Noken is made of special wood which does not break easily, like rattan.

Noken is gradually developed in its production with the passage of time. After it is woven, Noken is given different colours and became very attractive. Noken is normally found at traditional markets in Papua.

“And the TMII had been chosen because it will be made a model of cultural arrangement by other countries,” Harry said.

He said besides the three to be forwarded to Unesco, in 2011 the Saman dance will also be declared an Indonesian world heritage.

Bali, they are seeking guidance from a spiritual healer. In Rome, they are lapping up gelato. And in India, they are visiting temples.

Fans of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, have been following in her footsteps ever since it was published in 2006. The book describes a year Gilbert spent living in Italy, India and Indonesia on the rebound from a divorce and failed romance.

But the travel industry is betting that the film version starring Julia Roberts – to be released in New Zealand in early October – will inspire even more globe-trotting. Hotels, tour companies and guidebook publishers are offering everything from do-it-yourself itineraries to luxury trips.

The movie even has “official” travel partners: Lonely Planet, which created a website at lonelyplanet.com with recommendations for sightseeing and lodging, and STA Travel, which is advertising a contest for a 21-day trip to the three countries.

Naturally, it is a trip for one.

For high-end travellers, there are invitations like this one: “Eat. Pray. Fall in love with Micato Safaris’ Inspirational India Tour.” Price tag: US$19,795 ($27,392).

But plenty of fans have replicated parts of Gilbert’s journey on their own. Australian tourist Zoe Moran was reading the book as she stopped by the San Crispino ice cream shop near the Trevi Fountain in Rome, where Gilbert ate gelato three times in one day.

“I just got to the part in Rome, so I’m trying to follow the footsteps of Gilbert,” she said.

Gilbert writes of savouring good food and soaking up sights like the Villa Borghese and Piazza del Popolo.

Some Eat, Pray, Love devotees have found their way to Ubud, the artsy town in Bali where Gilbert seeks guidance from Ketut Liyer, a spiritual healer, and makes friends with a cafe owner named Wayan.

Gilbert notes in the book that tourism to Indonesia plummeted after a series of terror bombings. Liyer even says to her: “If you have Western friends come to visit Bali, bring them to me for palm-reading. I am very empty in my bank since the bomb.”

Liyer’s wish came true. Since the book was published, he said: “I have more foreign tourists visiting me.” He estimated the number of visitors to be in the “hundreds”.

As seekers dropped by – including a group from Japan who said they heard about him from the book – Liyer offered cheerful palm and face readings, predicting luck, wealth and long life. And just as Gilbert described, he asked his guests to help him practise speaking English.

Ngurah Wijaya, head of the Bali Tourism Board, says it is impossible to quantify how many tourists Indonesia is getting because of Eat, Pray, Love. But he says it has had a “great impact” in making “people understand that Bali is safe”.

Kathryn Alice, who describes herself as a “love guru” based in Los Angeles (“I help people find their soul mates”), took one of her followers to Liyer’s home and also ate at Wayan’s cafe.

But Alice noted that many of the tours being offered by travel companies “have little resemblance” to the actual places described in Eat, Pray, Love.

“People can go and do it a lot cheaper for themselves,” she said.

Many Eat, Pray, Love packages are geared to India, but do not include the ashram where Gilbert is believed to have spent several months, Gurudev Siddha Peeth at Ganeshpuri in Maharashtra, about 137km from Mumbai.

Abercrombie & Kent spokeswoman Kelly Brewer says the ashram has a “process of application and approval and they do not welcome casual visitors”.

That’s why Abercrombie & Kent offers a “similarly enriching experience” on its “Treasures of Northern India: Journeys for Women” tour “without having to go through the rigorous screening process”.

Abercrombie & Kent’s options include a day-trip visit to the Hari Mandir temple, with lunch at an adjacent hotel.

Roberts, while in India filming, visited Hari Mandir Ashram and shot scenes in a nearby village about 64km from New Delhi.

Hotels in locations unrelated to the book are jumping on the bandwagon, too: The Benjamin in Manhattan, Five Gables Inn & Spa in St Michaels, Maryland, and the Red Mountain Resort in Utah all have packages themed on the book.

After all, why go flying around the world when, as a pitch from Tucson put it, “at Miraval, Arizona, you can find it all in one place”.

Meanwhile, not every place mentioned in the book has seen an increase in customers.

Pizzeria Da Michele in Naples, where Gilbert says she had the “best pizza in the world”, and where Roberts filmed a scene in the movie, says the number of customers has been about the same.

The Leonardo da Vinci Academy of Language Studies, where Gilbert took Italian classes, also said it had not had an increase in applications.

While Gilbert fans are finding their way to Italy, India, Indonesia, and maybe San Antonio, the author has moved on. At the end of Eat, Pray, Love, she falls in love with a Brazilian-born Australian, whom she later marries.

And in the August issue of Travel + Leisure magazine, under a headline of “My Favourite Place”, Gilbert reveals that her “idea of a perfect city” is nowhere near the places touted in Eat, Pray, Love.

Instead, she recommends Melbourne.
