Australians topped the list of foreign tourists visiting Bali in 2009, with a total of 446,570 people from Australia, increasing from 313,111 in 2008, visiting the resort island last year.

“Many Australians consider Bali their second home,” head of the Bali Central Bureau of Statistics Ida Komang Wisnu told Antara state news agency Thursday

He said most of the Australians arrived in Bali through Ngurah Rai Airport directly from Australia, and the others came by yacht.

Second on the list are Japanese tourists, she added. Last year, the Japanese were top of the list.

Pastor-Susan-Scarcella

“You can’t save the world, but if you can do something to help one person then start with that.”

This is the advice of Pastor Susan Scarcella.

Affectionately known as Mama Sue to many, the pastor from Liverpool was yesterday humbled to be named on the Australia Day Honours List.

She received an Order of Australia medal for her service to overseas humanitarian aid projects.

When she was 19 years old, Mama Sue went overseas as a missionary.

She decided to go to Indonesia, because she had studied the language at school and university, where she helped out at the Widhya Asih Orphanage, run by a Protestant Christian church in Bali.

Still to this day she helps them. “It’s just natural, when someone is in need you just give them a hand,” she said.

Today, Mama Sue collects practical gifts and resources to take to the orphans, including clothes, school books, pens, dolls, cars, beauty kits and mosquito nets.

While she is there, she also teaches the kids English.

Presently there are more than 450 children in the orphanage.

“I love the friendliness of the people there and I love the children,” Mama Sue said.

“People always say if you can’t find Sue just look for the children.”

Mama Sue has also taken individuals and groups with her to the orphanage.

She also arranges individual and corporate donations for distribution in Bali, Yogyakarta and Aceh and, more recently, to Tanzania, Chile, Pakistan, India and Samoa.

She buys products from Indonesia or things the kids have made and sells them in Australia for a profit to go back into the orphanages.

“We’ve always had Christian values in Australia, that’s why Australians always give to the poor and needy,” she said.

“Australians are very generous.”

She said the people that she helped always wanted to pay it forward and give, so it was a beautiful cycle.

Mama Sue is part of the Southern Cross Association of Churches.

She is also a member of the Wesley International Congregation.

The Culture and Tourism Ministry has recorded more than 4.6 million foreign tourist arrivals between January and September of this year, up by only 1 percent from the same period last year.

Brimming with confidence, the head of data management at the ministry, Wibowo, told Antara on Monday the national target of 6.5 million arrivals remained within reach.

Wibowo said seven international airports saw a significant increase in the number of foreign tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2008, including Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport. Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, Riau booked the biggest increase with 60.5 percent.

The ministry’s data reveals, however, eight airports, including the country’s largest airport Soekarno-Hatta, posted less arrivals in the first nine months of this year than the same period last year.

Widodo said the ministry would insist on raising the target to 7 million arrivals next year.

Kudeta Restaurant

Bali has two entries in the list of Asia’s top 10 restaurants in an international fine food guide released Wednesday, confirming the island’s reputation as a top tourism spot offering excellent dining experiences.

The two restaurants – Mozaic and Ku De Ta – rank sixth and ninth in the second edition of The Miele Guide, which was launched at The Fullerton Hotel in Singapore on Wednesday evening.

The best two restaurants in Asia are still, according to Asian diners and the guide’s jury, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Hong Kong and Iggy’s in Singapore. However, this year these two gastronomic gems have swapped places, with L’Atelier claiming the top spot and bragging rights as Asia’s best restaurant.

“This second edition is a strong and diverse showcase of our region’s top chefs and restaurateurs, and it is an honest, practical guide to the best of dining in Asia,” said Pauline Ooi, associate publisher of The Miele Guide.

The independent guide, created in 2008 in order to better recognize and celebrate Asia’s best chefs and restaurants, is published by Ate Media and sponsored by Miele, a German manufacturer of premium and innovative home appliances. It will be available in leading bookstores across Asia from Oct. 1.

This year, the 180-page guide, claiming to be the authoritative guide to Asia’s finest restaurants, features 450 restaurants from 16 countries in Asia, 130 more than the first edition’s list of 320 restaurants from 13 countries.

In addition to ranking and profiling Asia’s top 20 restaurants, the guide – a celebration of Asia’s vast and vibrant culinary landscape, rich with history and innovation – also ranks the top five restaurants within each country.

In Indonesia, the top five restaurants – all in Bali – are Mozaic, Ku De Ta, Naughty Nuri’s Warung and Grill, Sarong Restaurant Bali and Bumbu Bali. In total, the food guide features 25 restaurants across the country. Of these, 14 are in Bali.

Mozaic, in fifth place last year, is praised for delivering magic – an exquisite balance of cuisine, service and setting that makes it truly exceptional.

The restaurant’s chef-owner Chris Salans is recognized for his skill in marrying his French skill with traditional Balinese ingredients and flavors to achieve inventive and delicious results.

“His cuisine is global in the sense that the well-traveled diner will recognize and appreciate chef Salans’ accomplished mastery of the contemporary language of fine dining,” the guide states.

The popular club-bar-restaurant Ku De Ta, located in Bali’s prime beach Kuta, pushed its way into the top 20, praised by the guide as “a must visit”.

“Ku De Ta is the perfect example of the restaurant as an experience. And it is the experience that leaves people breathlessly wanting more each time they visit.

“Ku De Ta is, hands down, one of the coolest places in Asia in which to eat, drink, and be merry.”

The restaurants were selected based upon the opinions of the region’s respected restaurant critics and food writers, a public vote and votes by The Miele Guide’s invited jury, with anonymous tastings conducted by contributing editors and its editorial team.

Voters came from 98 countries – up from 40 countries last year – amounting to more than 19,000 registered online voters casting more than 98,000 votes over 10 weeks. Each voter was given 10 votes. Asia-based voters could vote for no more than three restaurants in their own countries.

When assessing restaurants, all voters and jury members are asked to consider the quality of the food served, the ambience of the restaurant, and the level of service offered. Most importantly, their votes should reflect the tastes of Asian diners.

Batik Indonesia

As home to thousands of ethnic subgroups, Indonesia boasts a vast range of traditional fabrics, each with unique patterns and colors.

A selection of these fabrics were recently showcased in a fashion show titled Seribu Warna Kain Nusantara (The Thousand Colors of Indonesian Fabrics) by Rumah Pesona Kain, an association that specializes in materials.

The fabrics on display – from 12 areas in total – were grouped according to their origins, with sections specifically on eastern Indonesia, Java and the western part of the country.

The show presented work from 13 Indonesian designers, each of whom used specific materials to make modern and traditional dresses.

Thomas Sigar paired Aceh’s famous songket (traditionally woven fabric) – which comes in traditional long fabrics or trousers -with tunic shirts. Sofie, another Achenese designer, made asymmetric dresses with floral embellishments using the traditional fabric.

Carmanita, from Jambi, paired traditional batik from the region with layered shirts, while Ari Seputra designed shoulder dresses and boleros made from local songket. She used songket from both Jambi and Riau.

The next section featured various Javanese batik designs from areas less commonly visited, such as Sidoarjo and Garut.

Chossy Latu, who worked with Sidoarjo batik, combined traditional fabrics with modern kebaya (traditional female attire), matching the bright colors depicted in the batik designs. Fellow designer Barli Asmara also transformed traditional batik into evening dresses.

Ghea Panggabean presented Banten batik with a simbut pattern in ethnic bohemian designs, while Deden Siswanto turned Kudus batik into padded shirts.

Designs for Semarang batik were adopted by Stephanus Hamy, who layers coastal patterns like buketan (bouquet) and pagi-sore (morning-evening) on kimono-style shirts, vests and stoles.

Tuty Cholid worked with Rangrang silk from Nusa Penida, weaving a soft, light and modern outfit. The silhouettes in Tuty’s design are inspired by kaftans and are dominated by pleats.

While traditional Rangrang weaving is dominated by solid colors, Tuty chose grey chromes paired with purple, olive green, light orange and dark blue.

Itang Yunasz used Bugis songket for his Islamic dress designs, modifying what are normally short-sleeved Bodo shirts into long sleeved ones. Denny Wirawan used East Nusa Tenggara weaving on jackets and shirts, and paired them with jodhpur pants.

Oscar Lawalata presented Geringsing silk-weaving skills from Tenganan village, Bali. While switching the weaving thread with a smoother material, Oscar retained the traditional patterns such as Lubeng (scorpion), Cemplong (large flower superimposed on a smaller one) and Cempaka (a species of frangipani).

“As a designer, we need to show that traditional fabrics can be used for modern dresses. We provide modern touches, such as new machines and materials, without eliminating traditional aspects,” Oscar said.

Ike Nirwan Bakrie, one of the association’s founders, said the decision to feature the fabrics in an exhibit meant the craftsmen’s ability came into question, as they only had three months to produce their pieces.

As batik craftsmen work in different conditions, the foundation helps them in various ways, Ike said.

“If their productivity is high, we focus on the marketing and the fabric development. If they have low productivity, we help them by, for example, bringing textile experts to them,” she said.

Established in September 2005, Rumah Pesona Kain has now fostered 31 traditional fabric communities across the country.

It’s confirmed: The Pretty Woman herself, Hollywood actress Julia Roberts, will begin filming in Bali next month for the film adaptation of the best-selling book “Eat, Pray, Love.”

The Balinese provincial government confirmed on Friday it had issued the permits needed to shoot the film, with Roberts being scheduled to appear on set from Oct. 16 to Nov. 6.

“We have issued the permit to shoot in Gianyar. Their preparation is complete,” said Ida Bagus Puruvita, the Gianyar cultural office’s chief of permits and films.

The shoot is planned to take place at the traditional markets and Monkey Forest in Ubud, along with the nearby villages of Demayu and Tegalalang, and in Badung, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua.

Permits for these locations were obtained by the official representative of the production crew, Tino Taroengallo.

Puruvita said the government would supervise the shoot to ensure the crew did not take any unnecessary pictures related to local traditions or religion.

The screenplay will be written by American television writer Ryan Murphy, and produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment production company.

Roberts is an Academy Award-winning actress who has starred in many Hollywood films, including “Notting Hill” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

“Eat, Pray, Love” is the best-selling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert. It tells her story of overcoming a deep depression after a painful divorce during a journey of soul-searching and self-discovery. In her search for peace, she spends a year traveling in Italy, India and Indonesia.

While in Bali, the author learns how to balance earthly delights with spirituality and discovers the meaning of love.

The book has been the subject of much controversy in Bali because of passages about a Balinese medicine man the author met in Ubud. The man reportedly helped Balinese housewives with infertile husbands get pregnant by arranging sexual trysts with drivers and gigolos.

But Puruvita said he hoped the movie would promote Bali to the world. “Why impede it? After all, it will also promote [tourism] in Bali,” he said.

Which is the best beach in Bali? We haven’t been before and want to get it right. We like nice sand and clear water of course, some palms if possible, but nothing actually deserted ­ a beach bar and somewhere to walk to lunch would be great. And not a huge drive from the airport please.

Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: I’d say to avoid Kuta Beach, which is great fun for a day, but not for a week, and Nusa Dua, which in fencing out local people and culture from its enclave of hotels, has rather passed its sell by date.

So Sanur is the one for you. It’s a lovely stretch of white sand, with a mild surf, and a much more villagey atmosphere than its brasher cousins around Kuta. It seems sleepy at first, on first squint, and it¹s true that it doesn’t have the beach parties and surfie goings on of the western beaches, but it has some terrific hotels and restaurants, a more relaxed and less hassley ambiance, and walking along the pathway at the back of the beach is a real pleasure.

If you need a burst of Kuta it’s only five miles away, and easily reached by taxi ­ the airport is a little farther on past Kuta.

On the downside though, it is on the eastern side of southern Bali, so while it’s perfect for sunrise gazing, the sun sets behind tress and hotels. For something even quieter, and more secluded, you might try Candi Dasa beach.

It’s about 30 miles to the northeast. There are good hotels and restaurants, but the beach has suffered terrible erosion thanks to the landside development and destruction of much of the reef as building material.

The yoga bug is fast catching on among the people of Indonesia, especially in the island of Bali, who are seeking better health, cure of ailments or beauty through the ancient Indian practice despite the ban on certain elements of yoga.

“I have been learning yoga for the past one year at the Bali India Foundation under the aegis of professor Somvir. The benefits have been amazing – I feel good about myself,” A.A. Ayu Sri Wariyani Se, a 43-year-old entrepreneur, said.

“My son has also started learning yoga now. And I have also turned vegetarian because of this…although I do give in to the temptation of fish at times,” she added.

Like many others, Sri was introduced to yoga by her friends.

“My friend was learning yoga from a Balinese instructor here and told me about the great benefits of the art. Then when I came to know about an Indian spiritual guru teaching yoga here, I joined in. Now I follow all the dietary advice that he gives me,” she said.

Among the modifications in her diet are having a glass of warm milk with a pinch of turmeric at night. For common ailments like indigestion, she again trusts ayurvedic medicine.

T. Apriyani, a yoga instructor here, said that she was introduced to the art by her friends.

“I learnt from a Western instructor here and then went to Malaysia to learn more about yoga. Although I have become an instructor now, I want to learn hatha yoga for which I plan to go to Mysore in India sometime this year,” Apriyani said.

For a country that saw its topmost Muslim body implement regulations on certain elements of yoga, the fan following for the art is overwhelming.

According to Somvir, an Indian academic who set up the Bali India Foundation to teach yoga more than a decade ago, there are more than 10 million people practising yoga in Indonesia.

“People here are realising the therapeutic effect of yoga. That is why we have 10 doctors from government hospitals learning yoga. And if all goes well, we will introduce yoga in two private hospitals here too,” Somvir told IANS.

“And it’s not just people from one community learning yoga. In the past two years I have trained more than 100 Muslims and students from other communities. We are trying to tell people that yoga is beyond religion…it’s just a means to a healthy life.”

Hotels in Bali are slashing room rates amid falling occupancies as the global economic downturn takes its toll on the tourism-dependent economy.

Total foreign arrivals hit a record 1.97 million last year as the island recovered from the impact of the 2005 terrorist attack. The second biggest market behind Japan, Australia accounted for more than 300,000 visitors, up 51 per cent from 2007.

However, the recovery is expected to be disrupted amid the international credit crunch, with the Bali Tourism Authority estimating foreign visitor numbers will drop 8.6 per cent to 1.8 million this year.

Hotels are scrambling to fill rooms. Budget and mid-range properties popular with Kiwis are offering the steepest discounts, with some halving published rates, while upmarket resorts hit by a slowing in the executive market are trying to be more creative in their response to the downturn.

“Some two- and three-star hotels are panicking and cutting their rack rates,” said Bali Hotels Association executive director Djinaldi Gosana.

“That’s a bad idea. We know from experience after the Bali bombings that once we cut the rate, it’s very difficult to put up again.”

The three-star Melasti Beach Hotel in Legian is offering its standard room at US$45 (NZ$87) net per night, down from US$96, and is throwing in breakfast for free, while the four-star Dynasty Hotel in Tuban has cut its standard rate to US$80 from US$145.

The price war is prompting a rethink from many Australians who would otherwise be reluctant to travel in the current economic climate.

“I know a lot of people who have cancelled European trips and are instead coming to Bali,” said Fiona Healy from Melbourne, who spent two weeks on the island.

Meanwhile, although top-end hotels are sharing the pain, they are more reluctant to reduce rates, Djinaldi said.

Instead, they are offering bonus nights, meals or spa treatments to wealthy guests who are reining in lavish lifestyles.

The exclusive Amanresorts group, which has three properties in Bali, said it had no plans to reduce rates, but had cancelled a planned hike that would have taken its minimum published rate from $US908 to US$1029.

“We are not dropping our rates,” said Amanresorts Indonesia area manager Monty Brown.

“However, we recently took a decision to maintain our 2008 rates throughout 2009 rather than introduce a planned increase.”

Some hotels such as The Bale in Nusa Dua were quick to increase rates at the height of peak season last year before tourist numbers started dropping.

Now, they are loathe to bring them back down. The Bale’s general manager Jose Luis Calle said he believed bookings would pick up in the next few months. He is holding prices steady despite a 20-30 per cent drop in occupancy this month from a year ago.

“We just put our room rates up by 10 per cent last August to September following a refurbishment and we are maintaining those, but with added values from bonus room nights and meals depending on the market, which makes the rate pretty much the same as before the hike,” he said.

“We are offering more value for money because people are thinking twice about going on holiday now. This time it’s not just a Bali issue, it’s global.”

This sentiment is echoed by The Legian, whose top villa carries a US$3000 per night price tag in the fashionable seaside resort of Seminyak.

The hotel is experiencing a 10-15 per cent dip in occupancy, sales and marketing director Samuel Gacos said.

“Our focus is not rate adjustment but rather extending more value to our offers,” he said, adding “There’s a shift in travel patterns generally. The frequency of travel is reduced, the average length of stay is shorter, and bookings are made last minute”.

THE first Jetstar flight from Darwin to Bali left last night.

The new service will also connect to Brisbane and the budget airline says it is the next step in Darwin becoming an international hub.

The Denpasar-bound flight had the first Territory-trained flight attendants on board.

Jetstar customer service manager Casey Lahiff was among the Darwin-based graduate class to crew the new international flight.

She told the Northern Territory News she was looking forward to the flights.

“I’ve always wanted to be a flight attendant, ever since I can remember,” she said.

“Three years ago I was a domestic flight attendant – when Jetstar extended their Darwin services, they offered me this opportunity.”

Darwin to Denpasar is the third international flight Jetstar operates from the NT capital.

Flights to Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City have been running for some time.

Jetstar chief executive officer Bruce Buchanan said the new service demonstrated the airline’s commitment to the development of Darwin as an international and domestic flying hub.
